Happy New Year from the Watcher!

Join the OMB Watch Team! (02/23/2004)
OMB Watch is currently looking for three bright, talented, hardworking individuals to join our team. We are seeking a Communications Cooridinator to more effectively communicate our policy messages to key audiences and, to a lesser extent, raise the profile of the organization; our Federal Budget group is seeking a full or part time graduate or undergraduate intern to assist researchers with a wide range of activities including federal tax and budget analysis; and the Information Policy/Right-to-Know department is seeking an intern to work on freedom of information and right-to-know (RTK) issues.

OMB Watch Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary by Honoring Public Interest Heroes (10/06/2003)
OMB Watch celebrates its 20th Anniversary on October 9, 2003. In honor of our banner year event, the board of directors and staff have established two recognition efforts. The Public Interest Hall of Fame recognizes 12 "unsung heroes" whose everyday work makes a difference in pursuing government accountability, citizen participation or social justice. These were selected from more than 70 nominations. The Public Interest Rising Star Award acknowledges the outstanding, dedicated work of three younger leaders and encourages their continued participation in the public interest. The first class of inductees will be honored during OMB Watch's anniversary reception. Information on the honorees and event details are available online.

Nominate Someone for the Public Interest Hall of Fame (08/25/2003)
As part of our 20th Anniversary celebration, OMB Watch is creating a Public Interest Hall of Fame. Our aim is to call attention to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the causes OMB Watch cares about—government accountability, citizen participation, and social justice—and who have gone largely unrecognized.

Joshua Bolten Confirmed as Director of OMB (06/30/2003)
Last week the Senate confirmed Joshua Bolten as the new Director of the Office of Management and Budget. His confirmation hearing before the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee was on Wednesday, June 25. The Committee reported his nomination out unanimously by voice vote on Thursday, and the full Senate voted to confirm him later that same day without any debate. The Senate’s speed demonstrates that, while some Senators may disagree with his viewpoints, there were no serious questions about Bolten’s qualifications for the position.

Josh Bolten Nominated as New OMB Director (06/02/2003)
As President Bush gears up for his re-election bid, a number of senior level personnel changes are occurring. One key change is the replacement of OMB Director Mitch Daniels, who reportedly is headed back to Indiana to take a run at the governorship. The President has nominated the 48-year-old Joshua Brewster Bolten to replace Daniels. As his name was announced by the White House, there seemed to be a general murmur of “Josh Who?”
