Congress Moves to Create a Greenhouse Gas Inventory 06/26/2007
In an effort to combat the causes of climate change, proposals to collect and publicly disclose accurate information on releases of greenhouse gases are moving forward in Congress. Two recently introduced bills seek to create an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, and during the week of June 18, the Senate Interior Appropriations Subcommittee included a provision in its bill that would require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create such an inventory. These efforts move in the direction of collecting accurate information on such a broad environmental challenge and, if the EPA's Toxics Release Inventory is any indication, could help to reduce emissions through the mere disclosure of information. OMB Watch Wins in Court for Access to Risk Management Data 07/11/2005
After almost four years of silence, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released updated information on Risk Management Plans (RMPs) filed by facilities with large quantities of hazardous chemicals onsite, in order to inform communities about the risks. The agency released the information to OMB Watch after the organization sued EPA for failing to respond to its request filed under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Industry Challenge Prompts Removal of EPA Database 01/27/2005
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has removed one database from its public website and slightly altered another due to a Data Quality Act (DQA) challenge submitted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber submitted the request May 26, 2004, asserting that physical and chemical property information in several EPA databases was erroneous because the data was inconsistent and contradictory between the different databases. The differing information leads to vastly different cleanup cost estimates for contaminated sites, according to the Chamber. Read More

EPA Releases Status Report on Chemical Information Program 01/05/2005
Health and environmental data on thousands of highly produced chemicals will be publicly available as early as next year, according to a status report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The agency has enlisted industry and environmental organizations to help collect the data as part of the High Production Volume (HPV) Challenge. Read More

OMB Watch Submits Comments on EPA's Science Inventory 06/30/2004
OMB Watch submit comments to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on its recently launched Science Inventory (SI) located at www.epa.gov/si. OMB Watch applauds EPA in its efforts to heighten access to science information by providing it online. The inventory allows the public to better understand EPA activities and the importance of research and development efforts. While this is a step in the right direction, OMB Watch believes there are several opportunities to improve the inventory's organization, content, usability, and search functions.

EPA Refuses to Release RMP Data 07/14/2003

This marks the first instance, of which OMB Watch is aware, that EPA has denied a request for information specifically collected to inform the public about homeland security risks they face. EPA Releases Enforcement Data Online 11/25/2002
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be accepting public comments for the next 60 days on its newly released pilot website -- Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) -- that allows the retrieval of enforcement and compliance information for over 800,000 regulated facilities, as announced in the Federal Register on Nov. 20th.
